In the session “Financing the transition from the Amazon to a sustainable economy”, promoted by the World Economic Forum this Wednesday (27), Brazil vice president, Hamilton Mourão, affirmed that the sustainable future of the Amazon depends on the expansion of the bioeconomy.

“This will become reality only with the participation of the private sector. We know that the current investment conditions in the region are not ideal due to the lack of infrastructure. Our government is committed to promoting an attractive business environment and boosting sectors of the economy, “said Mourão.

In his speech, the vice president highlighted some actions aimed at preserving and developing the region, such as “Operation Green Brazil 2”, which works to combat outbreaks of fire and illegal deforestation; a new initiative by the Ministry of Economy called “New Green Project for the Amazon”, which is being developed to boost private financing in the region; in addition to the National Council for the Legal Amazon. (Conselho Nacional da Amazônia Legal).

Regarding fires and deforestation in the forest, Mourão said that Brazil worked non-stop to combat the problem, but admitted that the actions “were not enough”. According to a survey by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE –  Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais), the rate of deforestation in 2020 showed an increase of 9.5% in relation to the previous year, the highest in the last 12 years.

With the economic and social difficulties that governments have faced, private investments have become even more important for the sustainable development of the region.

“It’s crucial that private businesses take the lead and finance research and scientific programs for the region. Governments, especially in the post pandemic economic scenario will not have available surplus to direct large sums to this kind of activity”, said the vice president.
