Companies partner with government to revitalize river basins in Brazil

SAO PAULO – On Monday, the 23rd, the International Water Day, the federal government announced a partnership with private companies to revitalize hydrographic basins in the country through the Águas Brasileiras program. Organizations will be able to allocate resources to revitalize the main hydrographic basins in Brazil. No investment estimates were reported. So far 10 companies have joined the project, but according to the government, at least 26 companies will participate. The companies Anglo American, Rumo Logística, Ambev, MRV Engenharia, Stone, Vale S.A., Engie Brasil, Bradesco, Caixa and JBS formalized their adhesion in a ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto.

Ministers Rogério Marinho (Regional Development), Tereza Cristina (Agriculture), Ricardo Salles (Environment), Marcos Pontes (Science, Technology and Innovations) and Wagner do Rosário (Comptroller General of the Union) participated in the event. President Jair Bolsonaro thanked the businessmen and said that the preservation of water resources is important and fundamental to guarantee food security in the country. “There is no food security without water resources. We have to preserve these resources, treat them with due care and respect so that we are not lacking, ”he said.

Financing for the revitalization will reach more than 250 municipalities in 10 Brazilian states. The São Francisco River Basin, one of the most important river basins in the country, will have 16 projects. Two others go to Rio Parnaíba and two more to Rio Taquari. The Tocantins-Araguaia River basin was awarded six initiatives.

The objective of the government initiative, according to the Ministry of Regional Development, is “to revitalize the main Brazilian hydrographic basins, guarantee water in quantity and quality for the population and attract private investments for projects for the recovery and preservation of degraded areas in different parts of the country” .
