Brazil announces fourth health minister in a pandemic year

By Bianca Oliveira

SAO PAULO – In the last week, Brazil recorded the highest number of deaths by Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, there were 12,795 deaths between Monday (8) and Sunday (14). The increase in cases and the imminent collapse of the health system throughout Brazil increased pressure on President Jair Bolsonaro to change the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello.

The chosen one to assume the position was the current president of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, Marcelo Queiroga.  The announcement was made on Monday night (15).

Queiroga will be the fourth minister to take over Health since the beginning of the health crisis in March 2020. Before General Pazuello, former ministers Luiz Henrique Mandetta and Nelson Teich left office due to clashes with President Bolsonaro in conducting the  pandemic, mainly regarding the use of hydroxychloroquine as a preventive treatment, defended by the president.

Eduardo Pazuello has been in charge of the Ministry of Health since May last year and is investigated for omission in relation to the health crisis in Manaus in early January. Criticisms against the Minister have grown in recent months and refer to the delay in purchasing vaccines and the slow pace of the immunization campaign, which reached only 6.04% of Brazilians over 18 who took the first dose.

In addition to the increase in the number of cases and the poor conduct of the Ministry of Health in the face of the crisis, the federal government has been pressured by the possibility of the Senate opening a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the government’s actions in the pandemic of the new coronavirus . The business sector also demands a stance in favor of mass vaccination by the Ministry, seen as the only way to resume the economy.
