This week, TikTok announced the creation of a Security Advisory Board in Brazil through a statement signed by The Americas’ Senior Director of Trust and Security, Jeff Collins. In the publication, the company states, “We believe that the creation of this Council and the constructive discussions that will result from it will help us build even more trust, accountability and transparency with the community and will enable it to discover, create and connect securely.” TikTok already has such advice councils in other countries, but the statement emphasizes that this is a global project to understand local cultures and maintain a secure and reliable platform for users.

In Brazil, the social network is one of the fastest growing. According to a survey carried out by GlobalWebIndex, in September 2020 there were already more than 7 million Brazilians registered. On February 24, the company released a report revealing that it has dropped 7.5 million videos published in Brazil, for violation of the terms of services or community guidelines. The country was the third in the world with the largest number of publications removed by the platform in the second half of 2020.

The Council, which brings together academy and civil society leaders from various sectors, will act to update content moderation policies when necessary and to examine a number of problems such as misinformation, hate speech or bullying.
