SAO PAULO – The Amazonia-1 satellite was launched this Sunday (28th) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center Launch Center in Sriharikota. Although the launch was in India, this is the first Earth observation satellite fully designed, integrated, tested and operated by Brazil.

The mission was carried out by the team of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), in São José dos Campos (SP), coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI) and in partnership with the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB). At the end of the launch, Minister Marcos Pontes spoke about the importance of the mission for the country.

“The satellite will be fundamental for monitoring the Amazon and other biomes in Brazil, in addition to inaugurating a new era for the Brazilian satellite industry”, pointed out Pontes in a broadcast from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, in India.

Amazonia-1 will provide images for environmental and agricultural monitoring throughout the Brazilian territory and will also be used for monitoring the coastal region, water reservoirs, environmental disasters, among other applications.

Among the technological gains that the mission brings to the country, INPE highlights the consolidation of Brazil’s knowledge in the complete cycle of satellite development and the validation of the Multimission Platform (PMM), a structure capable of adapting to the purposes of different missions and reducing space project costs.
