SAO PAULO – After generating great strain on the financial system with the exchange of the presidency of Petrobras, President Jair Bolsonaro began the negotiations of some of the privatizations promised in the election campaign and awaited by the market.
The bill for the privatization of Correios (Post Office) was handed over this Wednesday (24) to the National Congress and allows the private sector to ally itself in the provision of postal services through concession contracts closed with the government.
The privatization of Eletrobras, one of the largest electric power companies in the world, has been under discussion since 2018 and was resumed this week with the sending of a new Provisional Measure (MP) to the legislative branch. The company’s shares were also affected by a statement by Bolsonaro that said: “We are gonna ‘put our finger’ on electricity, which is another problem as well”, indicating a possible change in command of the state-owned company, just as he did with Petrobras.
On a visit to the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, in Paraná, on Thursday (25), Bolsonaro stated that the president of a state-owned company cannot dissociate itself from the social aspect, which has generated further falls in the Petrobras’s shares.
Quoted by local media, Bolsonaro said: “A state-owned company, whatever it may be, must have a social vision, we cannot admit a state-owned company with a president who does not have that vision. Predictability: we have to have, we have to anticipate problems and have a vision for the future, our government excels for that ”.
