SAO PAULO – On Wednesday (17), Butantan Institute began mass vaccination against Covid-19 in the city of Serrana, in the state of São Paulo. The action is part of Project S, which is expected to vaccinate 30,000 people in the region by April.
The vaccine known as CoronaVac, developed by Chinese manufacturer Sinovac and produced in Brazil by Butantan Institute, will be applied to volunteers over the age of 18. According to the director of Butantan, Dimas Covas, with this study, unprecedented in the world, it will be possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccine in controlling the circulation of coronavirus among the population.
“This will allow us to know in depth what is happening to all vaccinated people, but also to the epidemic. What will be the number of people infected, what is the need for hospital, what is the resource being spared. Finally, countless answers that have never been obtained before in an organized way in a study like this, which is why it is innovative”, he said.
The small city of Serrana, with about 45,000 inhabitants, caught the attention of the Butantan Institute for the number of people infected by Covid-19. In one of the phases of a serological survey conducted in 2020 in the city, 5% of residents had the disease – a rate considered high compared to other municipalities in the country that also participated in the survey.
