SAO PAULO – The House of Representatives (Lower Chamber) approved on Wednesday night (10) the project that gives autonomy to the Central Bank. The text has already been voted in the Senate and has the approval of the Ministry of Economy, now moving to presidential sanction.
The proposal has been discussed nationwide since 1991, but was listed as a priority agenda by President Jair Bolsonaro last week. The measure equates the institution with international authorities and is of great importance to foreign investors.
“It’s a vote that’s been waiting for over 40 years. We had the signal of ensuring the stability and predictability of the entire financial system; and the gesture of the President of the Republic to give up the appointment of the President of the Central Bank helped in the approval”, said Arthur Lira, the president of the lower chamber, after the vote.
One of the main points is the definition that the President of the Central Bank will have a four-year term, not coincident with that of the President of the Republic, with the aim of protecting the body from political pressures. The Central Bank’s priority will be to ensure price stability.
As economy minister Paulo Guedes said at a press conference, this is “a decisive project to ensure monetary stability in the country, to ensure the purchasing power of the currency, wages, pensions and even budget executions.”
