Brazilian 5G mission arrives in Japan

By Bianca Oliveira

SAO PAULO – The Ministry of Communications started last week a tour of Europe and Asia to visit manufacturers that hold 5G technology. This Tuesday (8), the Brazilian delegation arrived in Japan after visiting Finland and Sweden.

The goal of the mission is to monitor how the new generation of connectivity is applied in other countries, know the industry and investigate whether each company’s solutions for 5G offer any risk to data security when they are in operation in the country.

Brazil’s 5G bid will be the largest radio auction in the country’s history and the largest public offering of capacity for fifth-generation mobile technology in the world, according to equipment manufacturers and telecommunications operators. The auction notice is being evaluated by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and must be approved by February 24.

The Federal Government was pushing for some kind of difficulty for China’s suppliers via public notice due to Jair Bolsonaro’s strategic alignment with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The US government accused the Chinese company Huawei of practicing espionage.

After diplomatic talks between Brazil and China regarding the import of inputs for the vaccine against Covid-19, Brazilian government decided not to impose any kind of restrictions on the Chinese in the 5G technology policy in Brazil. However, there was a negotiation with operators to build a private network, without Huawei equipment, to serve the public administration, armed forces and other powers that want to join.

The “5G Mission”, led by communications minister Fabio Faria, has already passed through Sweden, where he met with the CEO of Ericsson, and Finland, which houses Nokia. In Japan, Faria will visit NEC Corporation and Fujitsu’s headquarters. The minister will also visit South Korea and China, ending the tour on February 13.
