The election of the new presidents of the Lower chamber and the Federal Senate took place on Monday night (01). In a closed vote, the command of the legislative power was attributed, respectively, to Arthur Lira and Rodrigo Pacheco.
At the House of Representatives, the election was marked by a dispute between President Jair Bolsonaro’s allies and independent sectors, represented by, until then president, Rodrigo Maia. The main points of divergence between these groups are the prioritization of an economic agenda by the independents, instead of conservative projects, and a greater propensity among the president’s allies to block a possible impeachment process.
The Arthur Lira campaign was widely defended by Bolsonaro, who congratulated the candidate on his Twitter seconds after the result. The deputy is in his third term and is currently the leader of the “Centrão”, a group of political parties that do not have a specific ideological orientation and aims to ensure proximity to the executive power.
“The presidency must be neutral. It must be equidistant. The chair is swiveling so that the occupant is able to look to the center, to the right and to the left. You have to look and listen from all sides” announced Lira in her first speech.
In the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco got broad support, ranging from Bolsonaro to the Workers’ Party (PT – Partido dos Trabalhadores). The senator is in his first term and promises peace and dialogue to promote policies for social development and economic growth.
“I assure my purpose of independence in relation to the other powers, in relation to the other institutions, always seeking to harmonize the legislative power with the other powers of the Republic”, declared Pacheco at yesterday’s session.
