Municipalities in the Amazon emitted more carbon than the rest of Brazil

By Bianca Oliveira

SAO PAULO – A survey published last week by the Climate Observatory reveals that 7 of the 10 municipalities that have emitted the most carbon in Brazil in recent years are part of the Amazon region and lead deforestation rates. The other three are São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Serra, in Espírito Santo.

The mapping, made by the network composed of 56 NGOs and social movements, is the first that gathers information on pollution at the regional level for all more than 5,500 municipalities in the country and includes more than a hundred sources of emissions in the sectors of energy, transport, industry, agriculture, waste treatment and change in land use and forests, which includes deforestation.

The three cities with the highest emission rates are directly related to the high rates of deforestation. Porto Velho, in Rondônia, and São Félix do Xingu and Altamira, both in the state of Pará, issued together about 172 million tons of CO2. The largest share of this amount comes from land use and deforestation for pasture, which corresponds to 25.4 million tons of carbon.

The study covers the period from 2000 to 2018, but deforestation in the region has grown in recent years. According to data from the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe), in 2019, deforestation in the Amazon increased 85% compared to the previous year. Already in 2020, there were more than 8,000 square kilometers of deforested area.
