SAO PAULO – The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on Wednesday (3) the performance of the Brazilian economy in 2020, which recorded a 4.1% decline, the highest in the last 30 years. Gross Domestic Product reached R$ 7.4 trillion (1.1 trillion euros).
The sector that most impacted the economy was Services, with a decrease of 4.5%. Strongly hampered by the social distance imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the sector accounts for two thirds of GDP and is responsible for the majority of jobs in the country.
Among the main pillars of the economy, Agriculture showed the best performance, with an increase of 2% compared to the previous year and increased its share of Brazilian GDP from 5.1% in 2019 to 6.8% in 2020.
The International Monetary Fund (FMI) even projected a fall of more than 9% in the Brazilian economy at the beginning of the pandemic. However, the provision of emergency aid, the reduction of interest rates to the lowest level in recent history and the recovery in the prices of basic products exported by Brazil contributed to mitigate the fall in GDP.
In the fourth quarter of 2020, GDP fell 1.1% and the outlook for the first quarter of 2021 is also not positive, as Brazil is currently going through the worst phase of the pandemic with new records of death numbers by Covid-19. This scenario calls into question the “V” recovery expected by the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.
